Mavlink is a community created and driven standards for Unmanned Systems, from air to ground to Underwater vehicles. The official standard can be found at mavlink.org. The initial experimental MAVLink was created 2008 and it's usage grew from there. Popularized by its use in Ardupilot it has grown to be the defacto standard for Small Consumer UAVs, used widely by everything from Ardupilot to the Parrot bebop.
