ROS for Parallax Eddie robot (to develop)
If you're doing this, I would suggest starting on the ROS-side with the TurtleBot code, which uses a serial port to control an iRobot Create. … The ROS part is found here, and the serial interface can be found here. Incidentally, these are both written in Python. …

Multiple turtlebots - real experiments
As for namespacing, you'll want to do that in /etc/ros/electric/turtlebot.launch for the basic TurtleBot hardware, and again in each nav stack launcher (turtlebot_navigation/gmapping_demo.launch, etc). … It took a while since, as you said, I had to remove the "/" prefixes: do you think it would be useful to remove them permanently in the official release of ROS? …

port or not to port
I haven't worked with it myself, but eros might be a place to look if you're looking for truly minimal ROS installs which can communicate via XML-RPC calls with the ROS network. … There are two other widely used options which allow devices to communicate with a ROS system without using XML-RPC calls. …

rviz produces the colouring. If you expand the PointCloud display in rviz, you'll see the option to change this. IIRC it's by axis at present.
