I have a bike with two stands and a flywheel like this:

The stands can be adjusted so that they don't touch the ground. Now, the task is to implement a self balancing mechanism: when I run the script, (with the stands not touching the ground), the bike should simply stay at one place without tilting appreciably.

Approach: I suppose the tilt of the bike (i.e. roll angle) can be used an "error" term, (the tilt is zero when the bike is upright) to control the torque on the flywheel. If the bike tilts towards the right (i.e clockwise), then the torque on the flywheel should be clockwise, which exerts a reaction torque on the bike in the anti-clockwise direction, which counters the original torque.

The bike comes with an IMU, so we can use it to extract the position quaternion, which can be converted to Euler angles using the tf library. Then, we simply need to use PID to control the angular velocity of the flywheel.

Another point worth mentioning is that I don't think something like $\omega= P+I+D$ is appropriate for this problem. What is important for balancing is the torque on the flywheel, which can be better expressed using $\Delta \omega$ rather than $\omega$, hence something like $\omega =\omega +P +I +D$ seems to be better for controlling the torque on the flywheel. With that in mind, I wrote this script:

The - signs in the PID function have directional significance. A negative value publishes a clockwise angular velocity to the flywheel. So if the error (curr_angle) is positive (i.e. bike tilts CW), then the angular velocity of the flywheel is negative and increasing, i.e. a clockwise angular acceleration, i.e. a clockwise torque, i.e. an anti-CW reaction torque.

This script somewhat manages to balance the bike for the first couple of seconds (it oscillates a bit about the vertical), but then the angular velocity of the flywheel starts to increase/decrease rapidly and eventually the bike spirals out of control.

What changes can I make to the script/my approach to prevent this from happening?

The obvious answer is to tune the PID values properly, but is there a systematic way to do this? I have tried changing around the kp values (since that is largely responsible for the oscillation), but at one value, the oscillations are too violent, and when I decrease it slightly, the reaction torque becomes insufficient to counter the original torque..

  • $\begingroup$ Do you have your flywheel oriented correctly? I thought the gyroscopic forces worked when your axis of rotation was moved. The way you've got it oriented looks like to axis of rotation for the gyro is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the bike. I would think this would make it difficult to turn the bike but offer virtually no protection to stop the bike from falling over sideways. $\endgroup$

  • $\begingroup$ Wait just watched the video and it looks like you're trying to do it by counter-torque instead of gyro action. You would want to make sure that your controller is trying to target acceleration and not speed here, because the angular acceleration is what will give you the torque. It looks like maybe you're using the PID output as a speed reference but I can't tell how your PID output is being used by the code you provided. $\endgroup$

  • $\begingroup$ @Chuck "You would want to make sure that your controller is trying to target acceleration and not speed here, because the angular acceleration is what will give you the torque" This is exactly what I mentioned in my "approach section", and this is what I've tried to implement too. The PID portion of my code is basically W=W+P+I+D,which essentially means I am using PID to control $\Delta W$ , which is essentially equivalent to controlling the angular acceleration. $\endgroup$

    $\begingroup$ @Chuck so sorry I couldn't get back to you. I tried this implementation, and it was like an improvement, but the bike still oscillated and eventually went out of control. Probably my constants weren't tuned properly. I could eventually get it to balance by using $\tau_{f}= -(k \theta + kd \dot{\theta})$, with k and kd selected/calculated on the basis of the idea that the DE of the bike should have a critically damped solution for $\theta$. This ensured no oscillations, and also the fact that $\theta$ and $\dot{\theta}$ were both driven to 0 quickly. $\endgroup$

I came back to this question and thought a bit more about it because of your bounty - typically the bounties are offered from a point of desperation, and I hate that feeling myself.

I think probably your code is fine, in looking at it. There are things that I'd do differently, like scaling your PID output by the time step, but you could distribute that timestep across your PID gains and a method like Ziegler-Nichols would still work because that method sets the gains relative to each other.

I think the real issue you're having is that you're controlling position. If you consider the bike to be a kind of inverted pendulum, then you'll wind up with basically

$$ \alpha = -\frac{g}{L}\theta \\ $$

which is the pendulum equation. The thing you're missing here are the dynamics of the system - saying your angular acceleration is zero (which would be true if $\theta = 0$) is not enough - you also need the angular velocity to be zero!

I think what's happening is that your controller is "snapping" to the zero-angle position, and you get to that zero-position with some angular velocity. The angular velocity means you have an angular momentum that is carrying you beyond the zero position, and you wind up with these oscillations.

What I would suggest is trying two PID controllers. Have the first PID controller setup to drive angular velocity to zero, with the same mechanic that you have now - PID output drives speed by $\omega = \omega + P + I + D$. In tuning it you'll probably notice that you have a scenario where your bike starts to lay down and the flywheel slows that rate by continually accelerating, up to some infinite speed.

Once you have your "angular rate" PID loop tuned to where it's slowing you down well, add a second PID controller to drive your angular position to zero. You would want the gains on this controller to be "much lower" than the gains on the angular rate controller. When you do this, you ensure that the angular rate controller is the one dominating the response, which is what you want - you actually want the bike to be stationary; the exact angle isn't as important.

For "much lower," I would ballpark the gains at 1/10th the values for the angular rate controller as a starting point and then try adjusting from there.

Conceptually, the angular rate controller should act quickly to stabilize the bike while the angular position controller acts slowly to bring it back to the zero position. If you set the gains too high on the angular position controller then you'll get a scenario where the angular position controller perturbs the angular rate and you get the two controllers fighting each other.

As with your current implementation, you'd just have

  • $\begingroup$ To be clear, I think you should try using your controller exactly as you have it now, but feed it angular velocity instead of angular position. Then, copy/paste the controller, divide the gains by 10, and feed that controller the angular position. Sum the two controller outputs and add the previous angular speed and you're probably pretty close to done. $\endgroup$

  • $\begingroup$ @satan29 yup, exactly it. Technically you should be using error terms there, not just the angles/velocities themselves, but if your references are always zero then it's essentially the same thing, except all your signs will be flipped like you have it in the question. $\endgroup$
